What Is ISO 3834-2? The Welding Quality Standard and How HP Steel Applies It
HP Steel · Marketing Dept. ·

ISO 3834-2 is the most comprehensive level of the international standard for quality requirements in the fusion welding of metals. In structural steel — where welds determine load-bearing capacity — controlling the welding process to ISO 3834-2 is the foundation of export-grade quality. HP Steel is certified to EN ISO 3834-2 and applies it throughout the workshop.
What is ISO 3834?

ISO 3834 defines quality requirements for the fusion welding of metals. The key idea: welding is a "special process" — weld quality cannot be fully verified by inspecting the finished product alone, since internal defects may stay hidden. The standard therefore requires tight control of the entire process: people, equipment, materials, procedures and traceability.
ISO 3834-1 guides level selection; ISO 3834-5 lists the documents needed to demonstrate conformity.
The three ISO 3834 levels: 2, 3 and 4
| Criterion | ISO 3834-2 | ISO 3834-3 | ISO 3834-4 |
|---|---|---|---|
| Requirement level | Comprehensive (highest) | Standard | Elementary |
| Typical use | High-load, high execution classes, export | Conventional structures | Simple structures |
| Records & traceability | Full, detailed | Moderate | Minimal |
ISO 3834-2 is the highest and most complete level — suited to industrial-scale fabrication and export products.
What does ISO 3834-2 require?
As the comprehensive level, ISO 3834-2 requires coordinated control of key areas:
- People: welders & operators qualified (ISO 9606 / ISO 14732); a competent welding coordinator (ISO 14731) holds technical responsibility.
- Welding procedures: each joint has an approved WPS, qualified by testing (WPQR).
- Materials & consumables: controlled origin, correct storage of electrodes/wire, identified parent-steel storage.
- Equipment: welding & inspection equipment maintained and calibrated.
- Inspection & testing: before, during and after welding, including NDT where required.
- Traceability & records: identification of each member, quality records, corrective actions.
Why does ISO 3834-2 matter for steel structure export?
To CE-mark and export structural steel into Europe, products must comply with EN 1090. For higher execution classes — large, complex, load-bearing structures — EN 1090 requires the manufacturer to meet ISO 3834-2. It is the technical "passport" qualifying a Vietnamese fabricator to supply international projects.
How does HP Steel apply ISO 3834-2?

At HP Steel, ISO 3834-2 is embedded at every stage of the My Phuoc 3 facility:
- Welders are trained and qualification-tested; a welding coordinator supervises the technical process.
- Every joint follows an approved WPS, with controlled parameters (current, voltage, consumables, sequence).
- End-to-end traceability: Tekla drawings / BOM → parent steel → cutting → welding → painting → QA/QC.
- Weld inspection (visual & NDT where required) with full quality records before handover.
Combining ISO 3834-2 with ISO 9001:2015 and EN 1090 capability, HP Steel delivers consistent quality across every batch — the foundation behind products shipped to 10+ countries.
